Recognition puts hospital in the top 10 percent in nation for patient safety

Medical City McKinney has received the 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals. The award recognizes hospitals for their excellent performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during their hospital stay.

Medical City McKinney was one of 458 hospitals across the nation to achieve this recognition. This distinction places an elite group of hospital recipients within the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated for their superior performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during their hospital stays.

“The Patient Safety Excellence Award is a validation of the effort we put toward preventing hospital acquired conditions during a patient’s hospital stay,” said Ernest C. Lynch, III, Medical City McKinney CEO. “We are honored to receive this prestigious award.”

Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients were determined by evaluating the occurrence of observed incidents and expected performance for 13 Patient Safety Indicators.

During the study period, Healthgrades found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Patient Safety Excellence Award were, on average:

  • 55.6 percent less likely to experience an accidental cut, puncture, perforation or hemorrhage during medical care, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals
  • 52.4 percent less likely to experience a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals
  • 62.8 percent less likely to experience catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired at the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals

  • 54.3 percent less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital, than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals

Medical City McKinney was one of five Medical City Healthcare hospitals to receive the Healthgrades 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award, including Medical City Arlington, Medical City Lewisville, Medical North Hills and Medical City Weatherford.
