Departure of Longtime Assistant Athletic Director and Offensive Coordinator Allows for Promotion of Tenured Dallas Area Coach

Prestonwood Christian Academy (PCA) announced that current Quarterback Coach Shanon Purcell has been promoted to Offensive Coordinator of the PCA Varsity Football Team; 2017 TAPPS 5A State Champions. Lions Assistant Athletic Director and Offensive Coordinator, Coach Steven Greek, has resigned after announcing that he accepted the Head Coach position at Liberty Christian School in Argyle.

“We are so blessed to already have a coach on staff of Coach Purcell’s caliber who can move right into our Offensive Coordinator’s position,” said Coach Chris Cunningham, PCA Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. “He has already brought so much to our school and program in the past three seasons, and I look forward to all that he will continue to build into our young men, and all that God will continue to do through him as he leads our offense going forward.”

Coach Shanon Purcell began his career at Pierce High School in Richardson where he taught biology both as a student teacher and as a full-time teacher to sophomore students. His football coaching assignments included varsity running backs and varsity defensive backs. Additionally, Purcell served as the Head Junior Varsity Football Coach. He then spent seven years at Highland Park High School where he continued to teach biology to freshman students. In the spring of 2003, Purcell was promoted to chairman of the Health and Physical Education Department at Highland Park High School and began teaching health education. He also coached the varsity receivers for Head Coach Randy Allen. During Purcell's seven years at HP, the Scots had four perfect 10-0 regular seasons, and the team was crowned the 2005 Class 4A Division I State Champions. Coach Purcell left Highland Park to become the Quarterback Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Wylie High School for the next four years, and helped take them to the Class 5A State Championship in 2008. Before arriving at PCA in 2015, Coach Purcell spent four years in the Plano Senior High program as a varsity assistant and began teaching environmental systems and coaching varsity football and track.

Purcell is an honor graduate of Allen High School and a graduate from Texas A&M University at College Station with a B.S. degree in health education and a M.S. degree in kinesiology. He earned a Texas teaching certificate in the fields of biology, health education and kinesiology.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to humbly serve Prestonwood Christian Academy, Dr. Taylor and Coach Cunningham,” said Coach Purcell. “It is a privilege and a blessing to be a part of such a tremendous football program.”

PCA’s varsity football program was positively impacted by Coach Greek in his nine years as Offensive Coordinator. The Prestonwood Lions have played for the TAPPS State Championship six times and won State titles in 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2017.
