McKinney Boyd fell to Longview Saturday, 27-10, in the Class 5A Division II Region II area playoffs at Richardson’s Wildcat-Ram Stadium.

While beating the state-ranked Lobos was a tall order, Boyd (7-5) looked in control at halftime, having scored 10 straight points to lead, 10-7.

Then disaster struck – and when the turnovers-and-mistakes smoke had cleared, Longview led, 27-10, midway through the third quarter, and Boyd’s postseason hopes were dashed.

“You can’t make mistakes,” said Boyd head coach Don Drake of competing with top teams like Longview. “You can’t turn the football over, you can’t put them in a position with a short field and expect to be in the game. … If we could’ve played the second half like the first, I’d like to see what happened. But, unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that.”

After Boyd’s 3-and-out from its own 1-yard line to open the second half, Longview promptly drove 36 yards for the lead on Dezmond Chumley’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Whitaker. Longview (11-1) recovered a fumble on the Broncos’ next possession scored again five plays later.

A second fumble on Boyd’s next possession was scooped-up by Lobo defender Travin Howard and hauled 25 yards for a touchdown, the final points of the game. Keaton Livingston’s end zone interception ended another Lobos scoring threat in the fourth-quarter.

Lobo running Jamycal Hasty rolled to 168 yards on the ground on 35 carries. Chumley passed for 122 yards and also caught a TD pass himself.

“Longview, they’re a great team,” said Boyd senior quarterback Curtis Ladd. “They deserve all that they get. … They are extremely fast, they’re great to the ball, they hit hard.”

Ladd, who threw for 168 yards and rushed for 40 more, engineered the Broncos’ best drive of the game, just before halftime. Tied at 7-7, Boyd drove 80 yards in 13 plays for Cameron Powell’s go-ahead 25-yard field goal with four ticks left on the clock.

On that drive, Ladd had runs of 21 and 8 yards, and completed a critical third-down pass to running back Dedrick Scrivens. The drive was set up by linebacker Adam Brown’s recovery of a Longview fumble at the Broncos’ 14 yard line.

Scrivens finished with 82 yards rushing on 22 carries. His five-yard touchdown run in the second quarter tied the game at 7-7

Boyd senior Slater Brown led all receivers in the game with four catches for 73 yards. “We came out a little overconfident in the second half, made some crucial mistakes,” Brown said. “By the time we started playing, it was too late.”

Asked about the season overall, Brown allowed there were successes. “We were supposed to finish fifth in our district and we got second behind, arguably, the best team in the nation [Allen]. But it’s hard to feel proud now, once you’re out of the playoffs and it’s done.”

“No one wants it to end unless it’s a state championship,” Ladd said. “But I’ll never trade this for anything. These are my brothers. … I’m so proud of my teammates and all the seniors. It’s been the best four years of my life and I’m surely going to miss this. It’s been a great ride.”

Drake called these Broncos “the hardest-working group of kids” he’s coached at Boyd. “And that’s not a knock on the kids that have come before. But every year it’s been elevated, in terms of their work ethic, their mentality and their ‘coachability.’ And it comes from senior leadership.”

“We’ll come back to work the Monday after Thanksgiving and we’ll get ready to get going again for 2014,” Drake said. “We love ‘em, we believe in ‘em and they believe in us. And that’s where it starts.”
