Reality Running’s Summer Kids Running Program participants will be running the fun run and 5K race at the Melon Dash 5K in McKinney. Thirty-four kids ran for eight weeks this summer with training groups in McKinney and Celina in preparation for the race.
Reality Running’s Summer Kids Running Program is all about running and fun! Children ages 5-12 years old learned the basics of running and training in a fun, non-competitive environment. Thirty-four kids met for weekly training sessions in McKinney and Celina and were responsible for running two to three additional times at home during the week. Along with running, sessions included strength training, stretching, crafts and snacks; and lessons on running form, goal setting, nutrition, math and science. Kids enjoyed being active and getting strong while being encouraged to set individual goals. Participants will achieve their race goals and celebrate their accomplishments at the Melon Dash 5K or other local 5K races this fall.
Reality Running’s Coach Sara Johnson created the Summer Kids Running Program as a way to get kids active and get kids to dream big. She believes that setting and reaching running goals gives kids confidence and motivation to do big things in all areas of their lives. Johnson is an RRCA-certified running coach who has been running for more than 10 years. She has completed 9 marathons, qualified for the Boston Marathon, and finished the Comrades Marathon – a 55-mile race in South Africa. Coach Sara has a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy and specializes in finding the best ways to encourage and motivate each individual, no matter their age, goals or running ability.
The Melon Dash 5K will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3 in the Chestnut Square Farmers Market (314 S Chestnut St.) in Historic Downtown McKinney. Click here for more information on the event.
