“When In Doubt, Throw the Out.” The Billy Whitman Memorial Golf Tournament, presented by Robert Richardson II, will be held on March 30 at Woodbridge Golf Club in Wylie.
The annual tournament benefits the Coach Billy Whitman Scholarship Funds for McKinney and Wylie high schools.
Whitman was a 39-year football coaching veteran who was one of the finest and most respected coaches in the state of Texas. “Whit” was an assistant at McKinney High School from 1992-99 and offensive coordinator at Wylie High School from 2000-05.
Coach Whitman is remembered for his offensive tactics, his way with kids and his love of life and the game. Endowment scholarships are being established through the Wylie ISD and McKinney ISD educational foundations to remember Coach Whitman’s passion for kids and to allow his name to carry on his gift for many years to come.
Wylie ISD endowed a $10,000 scholarship on Jan. 23, 2009, and McKinney ISD endowed a $20,000 scholarship. With the funds generated from this tournament, an annual scholarship will be awarded to one student from McKinney High School and one student from Wylie High School.
The tournament starts at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start, and dinner will follow. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. In addition to the one-round tournament, there will be Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin contests. Rain checks will be given for inclement weather.
Entry fee for an individual is $75, which includes golf and the dinner. Sponsorships range from $100 for a tee/green sponsor all the way to $2,500 for a title sponsor.
