Drum Corps International celebrates 50 years of marching music performances in the U.S. this summer, with its first-ever stop in McKinney

MCKINNEY, TX (July 11, 2022) – Drum Corps International (DCI), the leader in producing events for the world’s most elite marching ensembles of student musicians and performers for 50 years, will bring several of its elite drum corps to McKinney for the first time on Tuesday, July 26. A drumline event will take place on Monday, July 25, at TUPPS Brewery.

The performances and drumline event were originally scheduled in McKinney for 2020 and in 2021, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of both years’ tours.

"The McKinney community is blessed with our beautiful McKinney ISD Stadium & Community Event Center, which was designed for hosting a wide variety of world-class events,” said Dean Cimini, a longtime McKinney resident, community leader, music fan and president of Marching Music Made in McKinney which is helping coordinate the event. “Coupled with McKinney's strong sense of community spirit and passion for music, McKinney is the perfect location to host this event.”

The DCI regional tours visit many locations and venues from coast to coast every June through August. Auditioning for the DCI corps is a rigorous process and, for those who are selected, it is an experience in musicianship, artistry, and athleticism. Corps members are typically between the ages of 17 and 22.

“The City of McKinney is honored to host this Drum Corps International event,” said Aaron Werner, Executive Director of Visit McKinney. “The DCI organization is highly respected and well-known for providing first-class entertainment and we look forward to having these performers, their families, fans, and music enthusiasts from the area and beyond visit our community.”

The six drum corps that will visit McKinney to compete as part of DCI’s 90-event 50th anniversary summer season include the Blue Stars from La Crosse, Wisc.; Carolina Crown from Fort Mill, S.C.; Colts from Dubuque, Iowa; Genesis from Austin, Texas; Phantom Regiment from Rockford, Ill.; and Santa Clara Vanguard from Santa Clara, Calif.

“McKinney’s show is a great way to close out our Texas Tour and celebrate DCI’s 50th Anniversary celebration with our first visit to this wonderful venue,” said Dan Acheson, CEO of DCI. “Whether you are a long-time fan of the drum corps activity or a newcomer attending for the very first time, this McKinney show will be nothing short of spectacular, as these dedicated elite performance ensembles take the field to showcase their passion and creativity, while celebrating the important educational and cultural contributions of marching music at the highest levels of achievement.”

The performances will take place at McKinney ISD Stadium, 4201 Hardin Blvd. at 8 p.m. Tickets for the event are on sale now through DCI.org. The TUPPS Brewery Drumline event featuring the Santa Clara Vanguard percussion section will take place on Tuesday, July 25, from 6-10 p.m.; tickets to this event can be purchased online.
