McKINNEY (Aug. 27, 2015) — McKinney Boyd stormed into the new season with a come-from-behind 41-38 win over Mesquite Horn Thursday at Ron Poe Stadium. It was the Broncos’ first win over Horn in four tries. Boyd rallied from a 10-point second-quarter deficit to take a 34-24 into the fourth quarter – then made it stick.

Broncos senior running back Doren Gibson, in his first varsity action, scored two touchdowns and led all rushers with 89 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Grant Restmeyer threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions.

Penalties hounded Boyd in the first half, wiping out a Kaeden Markham screen-pass touchdown, a Landon Livingston interception and a deep completion to Jeremiah Campbell. But the Broncos persevered.

“One of the things we talk about,” Boyd coach Don Drake said, “is how momentum always shifts in ball games. When it’s shifting against you and it’s not in your favor, you’ve got to keep competing, you’ve got to keep battling. … I’m proud of our kids and the way they kept doing that tonight.”

Back to that fourth quarter: Four minutes in, Horn cut Boyd’s lead to 34-31 on a Chris Robison-to-Cassian Foreman 44-yard scoring strike. The Broncos answered with insurance points, a drive capped by Markham’s 2-yard touchdown scamper. The Jags’ backbreaker here: Brandon Bowling’s 59-yard catch-and-run on third-down-and-five to keep the drive alive.

Horn chipped back again with another Robison-to-Foreman TD, but Jeremiah Campbell handled the ensuing onside kick and Restmeyer knelt twice to end the game.

Trailing 17-7 in the second quarter, the Broncos responded with touchdowns on two consecutive drives – the first capped by Restmeyer’s 32-yard strike to Campbell, and the second with a Gibson 3-yard TD. Horn regained the lead, 24-20, to open the second half and forced a Boyd punt. That’s when the game’s only turnover occurred – and it was big. Livingston stepped in front of a Robison pass at the Jags' 25 yard-line and returned it to the 12. Three plays later, Gibson bulled in from two yards out and the Broncos never trailed again.

Bowling’s 99-yard kickoff return in the first quarter gave Boyd a 7-3 lead. Sprinting through a gaping hole to his right, Bowling went the distance untouched. “We were working on it all week, where the space would open up,” he said. “That’s where the space was … just like [against] Hebron last year.”

Horn’s highly-touted Robison, an OU commit, threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns, but was pressured at times and Boyd’s secondary made timely plays. “I was really proud of them,” Drake said of his defense. “We put them on the field quite a bit in the first half. They played a whole lot of snaps.”

The Jags’ Foreman had six catches for a game-high 123 yards and three touchdowns.

Markham, sharing time with Gibson, tallied 65 yards on 15 carries, with a TD. “I thought they both did some great things for us,” Drake said. “I felt like we had a couple of kids that could both contribute.”

“It’s nice to beat [Horn],” Bowling said, “and start the season 1-0. We’re excited about it.”

The Broncos travel to face Coppell, Friday, Sept. 4.
