LUBBOCK (May 22, 2014) — The United Family™, parent company of Market Street®, announced it made donations totaling $38,000 to Project Graduation celebrations, providing students with safe and substance-free graduation parties.
This contribution will support programs at schools located throughout the company’s footprint, including schools in eight Dallas-Fort Worth area communities. This year’s total contribution to Project Graduation exceeded last year’s by $8,000.
Dallas-Fort Worth area schools benefitting from The United Family’s donation include McKinney, Grapevine-Colleyville, Frisco, Allen, Coppell, Bonham, Prosper and Plano.
Offered at high schools nationwide, Project Graduation aims to reduce the number of youth involved in alcohol- and other drug-related highway accidents through coordinating adult-supervised, alcohol-free celebrations for students.
“Graduating high school is an accomplishment worth celebrating, and we are excited to celebrate the successes of these students alongside them,” said Shelby Crews, community relations manager for The United Family. “Students’ safety is important to us, and we are grateful for the chance to help provide a safe and alcohol-free environment through Project Graduation.”
A 2013 study by Liberty Mutual Insurance and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) found that high school students are more likely to drink around the end of the school year and into summertime. It also proposes that as many as three million under-the-influence teens may get behind the wheel in the coming months, and out of the 13 million driving-aged teens, 23 percent admit to driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana or other drugs.
