LUBBOCK (Jan. 7, 2015) — To encourage smarter eating choices for the New Year, Market Street will hold its “Build a Better Basket Expo” at all 12 Market Street locations in West Texas and the Dallas/Fort Worth area from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 and Sunday, Jan. 11.
Market Street in McKinney is located at 6100 W. Eldorado Pkwy., at the corner of Eldorado and Ridge Rd.
During the free event, guests can sample items throughout the store, get free blood pressure and glucose screenings and learn more about the resources Market Street provides shoppers, including dietitian-led store tours, the NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System and nutritious food options.
“After New Year’s our guests are trying to build healthy habits to stick to their resolutions and the Build a Better Basket Expo allows us to showcase not only how small diet changes can deliver big differences but how easy it is to make these smart choices in the store,” said Robin Hawkins, MS, RD, LD, director of health and wellness for The United Family, parent company of Market Street. “Our easy-to-use NuVal System and health tags allow for easy decision making and the Expo offers a chance for Guests to sample healthy products before they buy them.”
The NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System was created by an independent panel of nutrition and medical experts from universities and health organizations. It uses a system that scores food and beverages based on nutritional value from 1 to 100, with the higher score indicating the higher the food’s overall nutritional benefits. Market Street was the first grocer in Texas to implement the NuVal System, and the company is currently rolling out additional in-store signage to increase awareness during the New Year.
In addition to the NuVal Scores, guests will find many foods at Market Street feature special tags that highlight a product’s primary health attributes, such as “Heart Healthy,” “Low Sodium,” “Low Saturated Fat,” “High Fiber,” and “Dietitian Top Picks,” helping guests easily select items tailored to their dietary needs.
To explain the NuVal system and other healthy resources Market Street offers, registered dietitians from the stores conduct four different tours each month: Healthy Shopping 101, Easy Diabetes Shopping, Healthy Heart Cart, and Living Gluten and/or Dairy Free. Guests who attend a dietitian-led tour also receive a $5 Market Street coupon.
Expo stations will also feature various dietitian-recommended products for guests to sample, including items in the Deli, Grocery, Product and Bakery departments. A full list is can be found on the next page.
