Have some free time? Why not have the kids make simple bird feeders for your fine-feathered visitors. Here are three options that are quick, easy and tasty.

The first feeder is great for young children. All you need is a pipe cleaner and some o-shaped cereal. Loop the bottom of the pipe cleaner to keep the cereal from slipping off and have your child thread the cereal along the pipe cleaner. When they are done, bend the top of the pipe cleaner and have your child hang it on a branch. Super simple.

For those a bit older, rummage through your recycling to find paper towel or toilet paper rolls. Form the hanger by poking holes near the top of the tube, run twine through the holes and knot it. Have your kids spread peanut butter over the tube and roll in bird seed. No time to lose interest, it’s that quick.

Take the shell of an orange, string it up, fill with seed, hang it up and enjoy.

The last feeder we made is my favorite because of its organic simple beauty. Cut an orange (I bought a grapefruit by mistake) in half and clean it out. Poke two holes on each side of the fruit and run twine in a crisscross pattern. Gather the twine at the top and tie in a knot, forming the hanger. Pour in some bird seed. Make a few and hang them throughout your tree. They look really pretty and colorful.

With a minimal amount of effort, a few supplies and a few minutes, your family can feed the neighborhood flock in a simple, upcycled way.
