Register by Aug. 3 to Test Your Limits

MCKINNEY, Texas – Competitors of all skill levels are invited to face off this August at Craig Ranch Fitness & Spa’s inaugural Try a Tri, an introductory triathlon hosted by local champions. 

Triathlons are fierce cardio marathons, the most intense of which can challenge competitors to a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run. The Try a Tri breaks the race down to the basics, presenting an event that is accessible but still a noteworthy challenge. 

"We wanted to give everyone the experience of what a tri is like,” said Fitness Director Taylor Lanni.

Craig Ranch has a large triathlon community, Lanni said. Beyond specific running, cycling and swim programs, the club offers triathlete training sessions from resident Ironman champions Shawna Yam and Jenny Fletcher.

In the spirit of that training, Fletcher and Yam created an event that encouraged future triathletes to put aside their uncertainty and push past their limits. Anyone can take on the Try a Tri, Lanni said. 

The competition will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9 in the club’s backyard. Racers will begin swimming in the club’s 50-meter pool, move on to stationary bikes on the pool deck and complete the last leg on a running path through Millie Cooper Park. Yam and Fletcher will be at the heart of the action, greeting and guiding participants through each leg of the race.

Competitors will be able to test their skills on beginner and advanced courses, the former consisting of a 100-meter swim, 5-mile bike ride and 2-mile run, and the latter of a 500-meter swim, 10-mile bike ride and 3-mile run. All participants will win finisher medals and a t-shirt and are welcome to stay for a post-race breakfast with door prizes.
