I tried my hand at homemade soap and bath salts. I loved the idea that I could gather basic ingredients and, after a bit of mixing and melting, they’d be items regularly used in our home.
Hand washing is crucial to good hygiene and health. I’m constantly reminding my kids of the importance of keeping those little hands clean. So, when I decided to make soap, I set out to find a recipe that would be a friend in our fight against dirt and germs.
Vanilla Honey Oatmeal Soap
I came across a tempting recipe that seemed to fit the bill quite nicely: Vanilla Honey Oatmeal Soap.
Two of those ingredients were already in my pantry. I headed to the craft store to get the rest of what I needed:
- “Glycerin Melt and Pour” soap chunks (clear or white)
- Essential oil
- Soap mold
During the baby’s naptime, I was able to whip up a batch of soaps. A couple of hours later, they were set and cool and ready for a test drive. Here’s the recipe:
- 2 lbs. clear or white glycerin soap blocks
- 1/4 cup honey
- 3/4 cup ground oatmeal (old fashion oats)
- 1 tbsp. essential oil of choice (I used sweet almond)
- 1 tbsp. vanilla fragrance
Heat the melt and pour soap chunks in a double boiler. Add the honey and essential oil. Let cool for 5 minutes until a skin starts to form. Stir the skin back into soap. Allow your soap to thicken so the oatmeal will be suspended when added. Add the oatmeal and fragrance. Pour into molds and let cool for a few hours. That’s it!
Who doesn’t enjoy a good soak in the tub?
What if you could do your body some good while relaxing in that warm bath? Bath salts do just that.
Magnesium is found in Epsom salt and it is easily absorbed through our skin. Its health benefits are diverse and great, from soothing irritated skin to improving circulation to relieving constipation.
Add a favorite fragrance and you can reduce stress, re-invigorate or relax before bedtime.
Making bath salts takes just a few minutes and you only need these ingredients:
- Epsom salt (super cheap, in the pharmacy section)
- Sea salt (if you want)
- Essential oil
- Waterproof, shatterproof container
Enjoy these simple recipes and tips and take time to pamper yourself and your family naturally. It’s well worth it.
