McKINNEY — On Friday, May 17, there were tears, cheers, and standing ovations as the McKinney Education Foundation awarded $356,700 in scholarships to MISD graduating seniors at MEF’s Annual Scholarship Awards Night. The sum is a new record for the annual event sponsored by Baylor Medical Center at McKinney.
The underlying theme of the night was, and always has been, “Giving back to your community.” McKinney Mayor, Brian Loughmiller, introduced the Civic Organization Scholarships by encouraging the students in the audience to consider moving back to McKinney after graduating college. “McKinney is going to continue to grow and there will be jobs for you here. I truly encourage you to think about where you grew up, what a great place we have to live here in McKinney, and I hope you will want to come back and give back to the community.”
According to Executive Director, Edie Heinicke, “Tonight’s record-breaking success is due to the generosity of the McKinney community. Dozens of PTO’s, PTA’s, businesses and civic organizations choose to give scholarships through MEF each year. We are especially grateful to our endowed scholarship donors, Dr. Kennedy, and MISD for their on-going support.”
MEF Operations Director, Margaret Harsch, stated, “Thanks to the hard work of our Scholarship Committee who evaluated 490 scholarship applications, we were able to award 290 scholarships this year. Since its inception twenty-one years ago, MEF has provided scholarships to over 3,000 students for a total of $4,533,655. Through the MEF Advisor Program established nine years ago, MEF Advisors have helped students secure an additional $66 million in individual scholarships and grants. Tonight is a celebration of those accomplishments.”
As a first time sponsor of the event, Scott Peek, president of Baylor Medical Center at McKinney, addressed the audience, “It’s our great pleasure to sponsor and support this wonderful event. We recognize that McKinney, as a community, takes passionately it’s responsibility to serve and support others. We are proud to partner with MISD and MEF and thank them both for the roles they play in the lives of these kids.”
MEF would like to congratulate the following 2013 MISD graduates on your scholarships:
