Collin College students recently claimed national honors in the Sputum Bowl, a respiratory care knowledge competition. Held at the American Association for Respiratory Care Congress in early October, this was the college’s first national championship win for students, although Collin student teams have taken first place in state competitions for the past six years.
Sputum Bowl is a quiz show format respiratory care knowledge competition in which two teams face off, each attempting to buzz in with correct answers before the other. Questions include the areas of anatomy and physiology, diagnostics, pathology, mechanical ventilation, neonatal/pediatric care, airway management, pharmacology and more.
More than fun and games, the quiz show style competition reflects the knowledge gained through hours of study and practice, improving the students’ education as they prepare for the competition. Quick recall of the subject matter could make the difference for a patient as the students move into the professional world.
Collin’s student team of Patrick Forsythe and Kebron Isayas of Plano and Cesar Romero of Melissa had a perfect run through state and national competition, never losing a match. The team was coached by Collin professors Julie Boganwright and Angie Switzer.
“I couldn't be more proud of us for spending countless hours in preparation, and thankful for the time invested by our instructors,” Isayas said. “It’s phenomenal that we’re going down as the first team from Collin College to win the national title and undefeated in the process."
A second “renegade” Collin team of Alexis Matthews, Cassie Morris and Cindy Zhang, also attended nationals and made it into the second day of competition before being eliminated. Collin’s renegade team had taken second in Texas competition after losing in the state finals to their fellow Collin Cougars.
Collin College student teams have placed third in national competition twice and a team made up of Boganwright, Switzer and Grant Pipes, a former student, won the practitioner national title in 2014.
