Volunteer McKinney continues to grow their annual Make A Difference Day which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013. This event brings hundreds of volunteers together to complete projects for McKinney nonprofit agencies. This year, there are 20 projects that vary in size and scope – literally something for everyone.
A sampling of this year’s activities
- Working at the local food pantry
- Painting, landscaping and sorting donated goods for a local animal rescue agency
- Sewing project for local law enforcement and fire fighters
- Rehabilitation of a home
- Water supply project
Letter-writing / Card-making campaigns for:
- Active duty military in war zones
- Victims of drunk driving accidents or their surviving families
- Breast cancer patients
- Trail ride preparation
The event is sponsored by local businesses, the McKinney Community Development Corporation and the City of McKinney. Businesses support the event financially as well as through their participation.
The Payton Group designed the event T-shirts, offered a generous discount on the shirts and participated with their employees in sorting the nonprofit’s event supplies prior to the distribution. Market Street provided water for all project sites and many other businesses contributed to the “goody bags” that were given to each volunteer. Still others offered coupons and discounts as a “thank you” or signed up their employees to volunteer as a team.
Dana Riley, Executive Director of Volunteer McKinney, stated: “This event is something that this community looks forward to each year, and the participating nonprofits count on it in order to get their important work done. The support that we receive allows us to make it happen. Everyone who volunteers, along with the businesses who support our efforts, understands that it takes all of us working together to meet the needs of our community.”
This year, members of the Dallas Chapter of the Project Management Institute will serve as project leaders. They will put their corporate skills to work for local nonprofits while sharing their knowledge of the process with local nonprofit staff.
In addition, there will be “After Parties” hosted by local restaurants like Brother’s Pizza’s new downtown location, Raising Canes on University Drive and Italian Garden on Custer Road. These restaurants will offer discounts on Make A Difference Day to all volunteers who come wearing their volunteer T-shirt.
