MCKINNEY, TEXAS (March 2018) March is National Developmental Disabilities Month and Cornerstone Ranch would like to raise awareness and celebrate individuals with disabilities as valued members of our community who make significant contributions to society.
March has had the designation of National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month since 1987. During this month we hope to raise awareness not only of the barriers and obstacles that individuals with disabilities face in connecting with their community, but also of the incredible ways they are able to contribute and add value to society when given the proper support.
According to the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) over 5 million Americans are estimated to have a developmental disability, and there are over 13,000 in Collin County alone. A developmental disability is a severe, chronic disability which is attributed to a mental and/or physical impairment resulting in substantial functional limitations in major life activities including self-care, learning, mobility, capacity for independent living and others. These impairments require a lifetime of support or assistance. Examples of developmental disabilities include cerebral palsy, autism, down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, spina bifida, and many others. These individuals are our family, neighbors, classmates and coworkers and it is vital that the local community join with these individuals and their families in providing the care and support they need.
Since its inception in 2006, Cornerstone Ranch has joined other local agencies and organizations to promote and create meaningful activities that empower adults with disabilities to live the abundant life for which they were uniquely created, realizing their God-given potential and celebrating their lives. Cornerstone serves these individuals through its full-time residence and active day program. Residents do not spend their day in front of the television. Instead, they serve, exercise, worship, and work as productive and useful members of the community. Founders David and Cynthia Heaton have had this dream since 1999 saying, “Our vision is to change the way people with disabilities are cared for in North Texas by presenting a replicable model that is professional in care, pure in its service and founded on faith.”
Cornerstone Ranch is proud to celebrate National Developmental Disabilities Month by connecting the local community to the Ranchers through a series of celebratory events both at the Ranch and in McKinney and Allen. March 3rd there will be an Open House at Cornerstone Ranch, come and meet our Ranchers and see the center of our activities and the beautiful grounds. March 6th there will be a Mayoral Proclamation at the McKinney City Council Meeting. March 8th is Cornerstone Ranch Night at Harvest in Downtown McKinney where a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit the Ranch. The Cornerstone Sidewalk Art Show at Elke's Cafe featuring original art by our Ranchers in Allen will be March 10th from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The month of celebration will culminate in a Barbecue Bash at the Barn on March 24th from 4 - 7pm. Put on your western wear and join our Ranchers for a spin around the Barn-floor.
“Cornerstone has taught my son much more independence and spirit of service. More importantly, it provides a home where his life is edified, where he has lots of stimulation, friends, and peace of mind for his Mom and Dad, who love him very much,” said the parent of one Cornerstone Rancher. Help Cornerstone continues supporting these valuable members of our community through their events for National Developmental Disabilities Month.
