Well-known as an industry educator, Collin College will host its first cybersecurity conference, a two-day, event benefiting student scholarships and organizations Sept. 26-27 at the Spring Creek Campus, 2800 E. Spring Creek Pkwy. in Plano.

A collaborative effort between the Collin College engineering department and the North Texas Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), the event will run from Friday, Sept. 26 from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 27 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost to attend is $25.

Conference attendees can choose between consumer and industry tracks, and topics addressed will range from NextGen firewalls and hacking to social media awareness and forensics. Session presenters come from large and established companies, including Raytheon, Dell, GM Financial, Cisco Systems, Texas Instruments, Microsoft, FishNet Security Inc., FireEye, Accudata Systems, Palo Alto Networks and McAfee.

Dave Galley, director of engineering technology, said cybersecurity is an ever-widening issue in today’s society.

“The threat is increasing daily, not just to major corporations, but to consumers. Even tools like social media pose a problem,” Galley explained. “People have to understand how to protect themselves. Many of the companies that make protecting us their business are local and will be attending the conference as well.”

All proceeds will benefit the student chapter of ISSA at Collin College and scholarships for cybersecurity students. Lunch for both days is included in the cost, and continuing professional education credits are available.
