On July 15, Collin College’s Respiratory Care Program will receive the Distinguished Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credentialing Success Award from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).

Collin College is one of only 37 programs among the country’s 420 that achieved this distinction. CoARC presents the award to recognize a program’s success in inspiring its graduates to achieve their highest educational and professional aspirations and to honor the credential as a standard of professional achievement.

“We are very proud of the standard of excellence reflected by the Respiratory Care program,” said Mac Hendricks, who chairs the Collin College Board of Trustees. “This award reflects the continuing commitment of everyone here at Collin College to be a cut above the rest and provide an exceptional foundation for our students.”

The award is far from easy to attain. CoARC reviews three or more years of outcome data along with accreditation records and requires a minimum 90 percent pass rate by graduating classes on the RRT credentialing exam. Programs must also meet or exceed established thresholds for Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credentialing success as well as attrition and job placement.

Collin College District President Cary Israel said, “If you have ever watched someone struggle to take a breath, you know the desperation that respiratory therapists face every day. Their reaction depends on the quality of their education, so we applaud the hard work and effort of our faculty, staff and students in developing a program worthy of this honor.”

Last year, Collin College respiratory students graduated with a 100 percent pass rate on the State Licensure exam. They also had a 95 percent job placement rate.
