On Saturday, Sept. 21, the McKinney Independent School District held a Tax Ratification Election for McKinney residents to vote on a tax rate increase proposed by the Board of Trustees. The proposition to amend the tax rate passed and will raise the current Maintenance and Operations (M&O) tax rate from $1.04 to $1.17 per $100 of assessed property value and requires voter approval to take effect.

Due to state funding cuts of more than $15 million since 2011, the district currently faces a $10.7 million budget shortfall, and the tax increase was proposed by the board to balance the 2013-2014 MISD Budget.

Between early balloting and election day voting, a total of 9,300 McKinney residents voted. The final total was 5,617 for and 3,683 against, or roughly a 60-40 percentage.

TREs were held in several other districts in the state.
