The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) announced Michael R. Smith as Fire Marshal. Smith has been acting Interim Fire Marshal since July 2016.

Smith has been in the fire service for more than 30 years with more than 22 years of Fire Department leadership. He previously worked as Fire Marshal for Collin County.  During this time, he also managed the fire district, EMS contracts, mobile incident command, and hazardous materials within the county. Prior to his work at the county, Smith served as the US Fire Marshal in Antarctica, the Fire Marshal for Flower Mound Fire Department, Assistant Fire Marshal for North Richland Hills Fire Department and nine years in the Fire Department crash fire rescue in the US Air Force Reserves.

Smith holds a degree in fire science from Tarrant County College and holds Master level certifications from the Texas Fire Commission and Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

“Michael has a wealth of experience serving as Fire Marshal, particularly in the DFW area, and we are confident our Fire Department will benefit from his leadership,” said Fire Chief Danny Kistner.
