The McKinney Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors unanimously passed a resolution at their monthly board meeting Tuesday, Aug. 27 in support of the upcoming tax ratification election (TRE) being held by the McKinney Independent School District.

School Board President, Curtis Rippee, gave an informational presentation to the Chamber Board of Directors prior to the vote outlining details about the election. Discussion and questions followed between chamber board members, representatives from community partners and district representatives.

Support for the TRE was based on the following priorities:

  • When attracting new businesses and families to McKinney the quality of the school system and ability to produce, attract and retain a quality workforce is always a primary concern.
  • We need to continue to be a leader in education and be competitive with other districts, particularly as it relates to our neighboring districts in North Texas.
  • We need to ensure we can attract and retain quality teachers and offer the programming and support services that will create success for our students.

Chamber of Commerce President Jodi Ann LaFreniere Ray said, "Ultimately, the Chamber Board felt that increased local funding to offset reductions in state funding was necessary to maintain the excellent school system we have in McKinney. If we want to be a leading competitor in the North Texas area for attracting and growing businesses, having a strong school system is a critical component to our community. We strongly encourage our 1,200 plus member businesses and McKinney residents to support this measure because it is crucial to our community's success."

Early voting starts Wednesday, Sept. 4 and Election Day is Saturday, Sept. 21.
