Texas ranks second among all U.S. states for the best taxes for small businesses, according to Portfolio.com, a publication affiliated with the Dallas Business Journal.

The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council recently released its 2012 Business Tax Index, Portfolio.com reports.

The index ranks Texas as having one of the 15 best tax systems for small businesses. South Dakota ranked No. 1, while the District of Columbia ranked last.

Eighteen different tax measures were considered as part of the index rankings. Those measures included income, capital gains, property, death/inheritance, unemployment and consumption-based taxes.

The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council also released an interactive map of the index rankings, which gives the ranking and score of all the states included in the index. To view the interactive map, go to http://www.sbecouncil.org/businesstaxindex2012/.
