McKINNEY (April 22, 2015) — Peggy Smolen, who has served as editor and publisher of McKinney Magazine for the past five years, is leaving that role in late April to take a new position with McKinney-based Independent Bank.

Smolen also is responsible for and previously acted as communications director for the McKinney Chamber of Commerce, which publishes McKinney Magazine. She now will serve as marketing director for Independent Bank, a Texas-chartered commercial bank and wholly owned subsidiary of Independent Bank Group, Inc. Smolen will oversee Independent Bank’s advertising, digital media programs, branding, investor relations, media, events and communications programs. She will work out of the bank’s corporate offices in McKinney.

“I have enjoyed working with so many talented and creative people at the magazine and through the Chamber, so this was not an easy decision,” Smolen said. “But I am excited about the opportunities and fresh challenges that Independent Bank will offer, and I’m pleased that I will continue to work in McKinney and interact with many of the people I’ve gotten to know so well over these past five years.”

Mark Turman, chairman of the board of Chamber Media Services, Inc., said Smolen will be missed, but he is optimistic about the publication she helped build.

“We appreciate the many important contributions Peggy has made to the magazine and to the Chamber over these past few years,” Turman said. “Under her guidance, McKinney Magazine has grown into one of the region’s most highly regarded local publications, and has emerged as an important news source for our community. We wish Peggy great success in her new position.”
