A view from the front of Griffin Jewelry's new location in McKinney.Griffin Jewelry, McKinney’s oldest jeweler, recently moved to its new location, 2811 Craig Drive in McKinney, in Eldorado Plaza, on the northwest corner of Eldorado Parkway and Central Expressway.

Cherye Walker is the owner of the family-run business, and was recently honored by McKinney Magazine as one of the Top 25 Women in Business for 2013.

Walker said the time to move was now, leaving the location at Virginia Square Shopping Center they called home for the last 25 years.

“We needed a larger space,” she said. “So the new space is larger, a much busier shopping center … a whole new look.

“We made the decision to move in January. We knew that we wanted to move to Eldorado Plaza if possible. The landlord, anxious to have such a long-term tenant, offered to move Cigars & More to a new larger store one space over, which then gave us two empty spaces to remodel into one large space.

“We used the Memorial Day weekend to get the store in order and officially opened on May 31.”

Walker’s parents, Jack and Fran Griffin, opened the business in 1985, and in 2007, they retired and passed the reins of the family business over to their daughter.

“When we opened in 1985, there were five other jewelry stores in town … but there was no ‘West Side’ store when we opened.”

While none of the other jewelry stores from 1985 are still in business, McKinney does have other great options for jewelry, which Walker welcomes and values.

“McKinney is largest enough for all of us, and we all work together, sending customers to each other and giving "heads up" on potential bad guys.”
