The founder, president and CEO of ConKerr Cancer -- a nonprofit organization that provides special pillowcases for children undergoing cancer treatment -- will visit Happiness Is...Quilting on Saturday, Sept. 1 to kick off the third annual Miles of Pillowcase Smiles.

Cindy Kerr is visiting the McKinney quilting store to kick off ConKerr Cancer's signature event. The Miles of Pillowcase Smiles Event will take place during the entire month of September 2012 to coincide with National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The goal for 2012 is to provide 44,000 pillowcases, one for each child in treatment. Last year, the total for the organization was 46,138 pillowcases or 22 miles.

Kerr founded ConKerr Cancer after her son was diagnosed with cancer in 2002. She began making pillowcases to brighten his hospital room and to put a smile on his face.

He loved it and so she began making pillowcases for other children on the Oncology Unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Kerr won first place in the 2007 Martha Stewart “Dreamers to Doers” program.

Happiness Is...Quilting! is located at 217 N. Kentucky St., on McKinney's Historic Downtown Square.
