The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has launched a free smartphone app to help Texans learn about electricity conservation and efficiency.

When ERCOT is experiencing high demand and conservation is critical, app users will receive Energy Emergency Alert notification messages and real-time, consumer-friendly conservation notifications, if users choose to turn on the "alerts" functionality.

ERCOT manages the flow of electric power to 23 million Texas customers, representing 85 percent of the state's electric load. As the independent system operator for the region, ERCOT schedules power on an electric grid that connects 40,500 miles of transmission lines and more than 550 generation units.

The app, called "the ERCOT Energy Saver Mobile Application," offers accurate, reliable, timely information about electrical power grid conditions in real time, ERCOT said in a news release This app is available in both the Apple and Google app markets for free download for iPhone and Android phones.

When you download the app, you can:

  • Receive conservation alerts with suggestions to help cut your electricity usage, especially when grid conditions are tight.
  • View Conservation tips that help you save money and live a green lifestyle.
  • View the current conditions of the ERCOT grid.

After you download the app, tell your friends and help spread the word to those who can help make a difference conserving energy during peak hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. throughout the summer.
