The start of dove hunting season on Saturday, Sept. 1 means that gunshots may be heard inside the City of McKinney's limits.

State law restricts hunting to areas of land greater than 10 acres, but allows dove hunting inside the city limits. Hunters must avoid shooting less than 1,000 feet from the property line of a public tract of land, school, hospital, or commercial day-care facility and at least 150 feet from a residence or occupied building.

Hunters must fire their weapons in a safe manner so projectiles do not cross the property line. All hunters should have a Texas Hunting License with a Migratory Bird Stamp.

If you hear gunshots and are concerned that hunters may be violating the hunting restrictions, call the McKinney Police non-emergency line at 972-547-2700.
