A Chamber member since 2012,  Fred Mahusay, owner of FREDSHOTS Photography shares his business insights.

What inspired you to start your business?

I recognized the joy I had in taking photos and sharing the images with others.

What services or products do you offer?

My specialty is the business headshot and I also enjoy photographing events, families, sports, model portfolios, high school seniors as well as online marketing videos.

What is unique about your business?

Anyone can have a headshot but what we offer is the FREDSHOTS experience. From the ease of scheduling, an in-studio option as well as the ability to be completely mobile, I give my clients the finished full resolution digital images at no additional cost.

How does your business give back to the community?

I enjoy volunteering for civic organizations such as the Crape Myrtle Trails, donating photography for charity and fundraisers, and giving away services in support of various community organizations.

What obstacles did you have to overcome to get where are today?

I learned how to shoot in the film days which required a hefty investment in film, processing, and prints. After many years developing my skills I launched my business in the Tampa, FL area. Ten years later we moved to McKinney TX and I faced the obstacle of having to restart my business and firmly establish my specialty.

What methods have you used to grow your business?

1. Investing time: I spend time networking and connecting with other businesses in the area because I value the time needed to build relationships, establish trust, and have the opportunity to provide quality service. 2. Utilizing local small businesses: After we arrived in McKinney we chose small business owners to provide the goods and services that we needed rather than choosing large national chains. 3. Promoting other business brands: Rather than focusing on how much money I might earn, I focus on how FREDSHOTS Photography can best partner with others to promote their businesses.

What is the secret to keeping happy customers?

Under promise and over deliver, exceed their expectation, place service above profits, and to value the customer above all else.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

My beautiful wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth is incredibly dedicated to serving the Lord, serving our family, and serving me. When I see the passion in her selfless giving I am inspired to work harder, improve what I do, and offer the same benefits and blessings to others.

What is your most/least favorite thing about your business?

My least favorite is feeling as though I haven’t been able to satisfy a client’s expectation. My favorite thing is when a client previews her images and for the first time, she feels beautiful when reviewing her photoshoot.

Where do you see your business going in the future?

Traveling to major metropolitan areas across the United States in order to offer my services like I’ve done in Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, and Portland. I am currently also working to expand into more on-site photography for major corporations in the DFW area.

To what do you attribute your success?

My success could be summed up from the Bible with Micah 6:8 which states do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and walk humbly with God.

How are you involved in the chamber and what is the effect on your business?

I attend the LINKS Networking meeting each week as well as some of the after hour events.

What’s the best advice you would give a new chamber member to get the most out of their membership?

Go to as many Chamber activities as possible and get involved. Schedule one-to-ones with other business owners in order to find out how you can create strategic partnerships and be an effective referral partner.
