Longtime McKinney Chamber of Commerce member, Griffin Jewelry, shares insights on business and being a member of the McKinney Chamber of Commerce.

Who are you and what is the name of your business?

My name is Cherye Walker, my husband Kurt and I own Griffin Jewelry.

What inspired you to start your business?

For years, my mom was in the cosmetic and gift business. It eventually evolved into jewelry, also. My dad, who was in banking, went to jewelry repair school mostly to be able to size the rings mom was selling. Time went by and their love for jewelry aspired. In 1985, they opened Griffin Jewelry and the rest is history.

What services or products do you offer?

We carry a large selection of fine jewelry as well as fashion jewelry, watches, and gift items. We offer everything from custom design and on-site repair to watch battery replacement/repair and GIA certified appraisals.

What is unique about your business?

I think the most unique thing about our business is that we sell both fine and fashion jewelry. Our desire is to have a price point for everyone.

How does your business give back to the community?

We support a variety of local charities and organizations, however, Smiles Charity and ManeGait are our primary nonprofit sponsorship recipients.

What obstacles did you have to overcome to get where are today?

The decision to change locations and invest in a larger location in 2013 has definitely been one of the most nerve racking, yet exciting, changes we’ve made. The highway 75 construction was interesting. Unfortunately, several business in our area didn’t survive the completion of the construction, so we are more than grateful to be here today.

What methods have you used to grow your business?

We have been McKinney Chamber members for over 30 years and consistently advertise in various chamber publications. We also host “Ladies Night Out”, “Mason Jar Mimosas”, and often fun get-togethers as well as, partnering with our fellow tenants in Eldorado Plaza for seasonal events. Social media too, has been a huge asset for our customer growth.

What is the secret to keeping happy customers?

Being a family owned and operated business, we want our customers to walk through the door and feel right at home. My amazing staff strives to go above and beyond to give our customers the personal attention they deserve. We realize that there are many other jewelry stores that our customers could choose to leave their precious items to be repaired or to make special purchases, but are honored when they choose us and want them to be glad they did.

Who has been your greatest inspiration?

My mom and dad. They followed their gut instinct and opened Griffin Jewelry when McKinney population was only 22,000 and already had 5 jewelry stores, including Zales. They handled the challenge of several economic downturns, yet Griffin Jewelry is the only remaining jewelry store from 1985.

What is your most favorite thing about your business?

My favorite thing about our business is helping customers with a purchase, often a surprise or engagement, and knowing that we have a part in their special occasion.

Where do you see your business going in the future?

Our bridal business has consistently grown over the years. Due to recommendations of happy customers, to their friends, co-workers, fraternity brothers and family, we’ve been fortunate enough to help couples in Hawaii, Colorado, California, Virginia and many more with one of the most important purchases of their lives. With technology as it is today, we can make sales that were not possible when we first opened. Our hope is to not only be the leading engagement ring store in Collin County but continue making brides happy all across the USA.

To what do you attribute your success?

Honesty, fair prices, and personalized customer service makes for a loyal clientele. Without our loyal, longtime customers, we would not be here today.

How are you involved in the chamber and what are the effects on your business?

We are a small family run business so it is very rare that I am not at the store. We have been chamber members for over thirty years and have committed to supporting its mission while balancing the day to day operational requirements of Griffin Jewelry.

What’s the best advice you would give a new chamber member to get the most out of their membership?

Get involved in your community and find ways to give back. Build your reputation on exceptional customer service, loyalty and honesty.
