How about taking Dad out for one of McKinney’s great burgers to celebrate Father’s Day? Whatever the toppings, size or side that makes your favorite burger special, you can find it in McKinney.

Square Burger

One step inside this historic art deco building surrounded by large open windows and original tin ceiling tiles and you know this is no ordinary burger spot. On one wall is a blackboard of daily specials and along another is a bar that houses over 30 beers on tap. This upscale restaurant has a creative menu created by co-owners Craig Brundege and Brandon Horrocks, both Culinary Institute Graduates. Their burgers are all 100% organic, meaning locally grass-fed, no hormones, no antibiotics and grass finished. Local Yocal supplies their beef and custom grinds it. Their burgers are all special sandwiches served on a brioche, ciabatta, whole wheat or pita bread. Some come with specialty cheeses and many have a house made condiment such as roasted red pepper relish which the customer can add. There are many appetizers and sides to choose from, but my favorite is the sweet potato fries served with roasted garlic aioli. Visit their Facebook page.

Baker's Drive In

Baker's Drive In has been in business for over 60 years.

Baker’s has been at the same location in McKinney for over 60 years. They make a classic burger that people come back for day after day. Owner Mark Montgomery knows many of his customers so well that he knows what they will be ordering before they get out of their car. His burger is a quarter-pound classic Old Fashion Burger. You can customize it with your favorite cheese, chili or more than one patty. They have used the same special meat mixture for years, had their buns delivered five days a week by the same baker, and used Ore Ida Premium fresh fries for as long as Mark can remember. They have other sandwiches like a turkey burger and Philly cheese steak, but their fries are the top seller next to their burgers. Mark believes his success comes down to two things … consistency and customer service. Visit bakersdrivein.com.

Culver's burgers are made fresh to order.

Although Culver’s started in Wisconsin, as the saying goes, they got to Texas as fast as they could. This is a fast casual restaurant that has over 500 stores nationwide. McKinney’s location is owned and managed by Jim Kuntz. His passion for Culver’s is amazing. Not only did he stress that his burgers are made fresh to order from never-frozen All-American beef, he took me to the kitchen to show me. Culver’s has a large variety of burger options, such as Swiss or Wisconsin cheddar cheese, sourdough or rye bread and onions, mushrooms and jalapeños. Their most popular burger is the Double Bacon Burger with Wisconsin cheddar cheese. And although they have fries, cheese curds and salads, make sure you save room for their fresh frozen custard in chocolate, vanilla or the flavor of the day. Visit culvers.com.
