82 Masterclasses, 25 Guest Artists, 20 Performances, 3 days!
Ovation Academy of Performing Arts, which is now located in the heart of Downtown McKinney, will be hosting a weekend full of Masterclasses in Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre, Technical Theatre and the Business of Being in the Performing Arts. The event will be held April 26-28 at Vintage Church, 107 E. Lamar St. and will have various performances at the McKinney Performing Arts Center as well. This event is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and DOES NOT HAVE AGE RESTRICTIONS! Participants can purchase a day or weekend pass, a show pass for all shows or individual tickets for a specific performance or masterclass.
Ovation Academy is bringing in top Guest Artists from across the US to teach classes which are not readily available to performers in the area. Classes range from African Dance styles taught by the ledgendary Mama Yeye, Stage Combat taught by award winning fight choreographer, Ashley H. White, Voice-Over Acting with Celebrity Anime Voice Actor Barry Yandell, Bodywork Modalities (Acrobatics and Movement) led by Carissa Laitinen-Kniss & Khristen Pahler of Twisted Bodies to Musical Theatre classes taught by local Accompanist and Vocal Specialist Rebecca Lowrey and many more taught by over 20 additional incredible artists!
Performances will include professional productions from Shakespeare Dallas, who will also lead a workshop on "Unlocking Shakespeare" and Charles Jackson's award winning one man show, "In Due Time: Pantomime". Charles will also teach a workshop on playwrighting following his performance.
Ovation Academy will present their Academy Production of "Sending Down the Sparrows", a historical drama about the mistreatment of the mentally ill and disabled during the Holocaust. There will be a staged reading of "Family Portrait", an original play written by the students in the Academy's Theatre for Social Justice course. Also produced during the intensive will be "Woyzeck", a twisted tale about a man suffering from mental illness who falls victim to the seven deadly sins, directed by advanced acting student, Brandon Carty. On a lighter note, the Academy will also present their Theatre for Young Audiences class production "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" based on the novel by Kate DiCamillo and the Academy Improv Troupe will perform Improv Live! There is somethng for everyone or come see them all!
Masterclasses and Performances are each 1 hour and 15 minutes long and run from 9am-9pm on Friday and Saturday and 1pm-9:30pm Sunday.
